Changes to Bath & Shower Emollient Prescriptions, February 2020
Norton Brook Medical Centre, in line with national guidance, no longer supports the prescribing of bath / shower emollients (moisturisers) due to the lack of evidence of efficacy.
People with dry skin conditions should:
- Use an emollient (moisturising) cream or ointment as a soap substitute during baths /showers.
- Alternatively, buy bath /shower emollients from pharmacies and retail outlets.
Although evidence supports the use of a leave-on emollients and there is clinical consensus around soap substitutes, the benefits of shower and bath emollients have not been proven.
A randomised controlled trial (BATHE, 2018) found no evidence of clinical benefit from including emollient bath additives in the standard management of eczema in children. There is no consensus of clinical opinion that such therapy is effective in children or adults.
The evidence indicates that using emollients as soap substitutes provides better moisturisation of the skin than bath/shower emollients.
Devon CCG spends more than £64,000 on bath/shower emollients each year, with no proven benefit for patients.
